Holding My Nephew

“He is precious,” I croon softly as Penny places my first nephew in my arms. His hair is an auburn red and his face reminds me of Percy. I smile down at his sleeping face. “Thanks for letting me come,” I tell Penny.
“I was glad to hear from you,” Penny assures me as she sits across from me on her couch.
I glance around her home and comment, “nice place.”
“Thank you,” she replies softly as a silence fills the room.
I carefully shift Andrew, who is tiny still, around so that he is more firmly in my arms. I run my finger along his soft cheek. I have to tell her… “Mum told the family.”
“How did it go?” Penny asks nervously.
“It went…” I meet her eyes and grimace. “They are all willing to give you a chance, for Andrew’s sake but Percy-” even now the thought of my brother is enough to frustrate me. “I’ve told them that you are invited to the wedding.” I slowly reach into my back pocket and pull out a piece of parchment that Penny leans over to get. “That’s the information. I wanted to give it to you in person so that Percy couldn’t question you about the owl.”
“What if he reads-”
“He can’t,” I assure her instantly. “To him it will look like a blank piece of parchment. I charmed it for your eyes only.”
Her brows raise, “you can do that?”
I shrug, “I am a fully qualified curse breaker and the sister to Fred and George. I have picked up a few tricks along the way.”
Penny smiles and nods, “I imagine so.”
Andrew stretches a bit and yawns as his arms spread above his head. “Aww,” I grin at how adorable he is. “He is really precious!”
“Thank you,” she agrees with a smile. “I suppose you’re going to enjoy having children some day.”
“Harry and I are adopting a toddler,” I reply. “Her name is Tina and she’s three.”
“You’re adopting?” Penny asks with interest.
I kiss Andrew’s brow and feel that ache in my chest that has taken residence there since I had to move Tina back into The Phoenix House. “There is an orphanage in Hogsmeade near our home. A good friend of ours, Susan Bones, is the director.”
“I know Susan,” Penny tells me and I look up in surprise. “We worked together at St. Mungo’s.”
“Oh! Of course,” I say. I know that Susan worked at the hospital but I had forgotten that Penny was a Healer. “Well, whether we have other children or not, we’re going to have Tina, hopefully soon after we’re married.”
Penny laughs, “That should be great.”
“I think it will be. Harry and I have been together for so long and life is too short. We’re not taking anything for granted any longer.”
“I understand,” she assures me and I meet her eyes.
Yes… I can see that you do, I think as we share a small smile.
